Kalamazoo College baseball swept the MIAA Player of the Week awards, announced by the conference Monday. Robert Ahlgren took home Pitcher of the Week, while Robert Newland earned Position Player of the Week.
A junior right-handed pitcher from Garden City, Mich. (Salem), Ahlgren threw two scoreless appearances out of the bullpen for the Hornets last week, picking up a pair of wins.
First, he retired all 11 batters he faced in Kalamazoo's 15-4 win over Elmhurst on Tuesday, striking out six. Then, he entered game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Trine in a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning and held the Thunder scoreless for three innings, striking out five batters, to take the win, 7-5.
A senior outfielder from Bloomfield Hills, Mich. (Bloomfield Hills), Newland collected multiple hits in all four games for the Hornets this week, hitting .571 (12/21) with two home runs, two doubles, seven stolen bases, seven runs scored and eight RBIs on the week.
Newland came up clutch twice in Sunday's doubleheader at Trine, smashing a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the ninth in game one, then breaking a tie again in game two with a two-RBI single in the seventh.
The honor is the second for Newland this season and in his career (2/17/26) and the first time that Ahlgren has earned an MIAA weekly honor.
Kalamazoo baseball takes on Calvin University Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Mich. as MIAA play continues.
