DAVENPORT, Fla.– The Kalamazoo College baseball team won, 13-5, against DePauw University Wednesday to finish the RussMatt Invitational 5-0.
Kalamazoo opened the scoring as Robert Newland hit in Cade Preissing in the first. After DePauw tied it in the bottom of the third, Cameron Kelly executed a sacrifice bunt to put the Hornets back on top in the fourth, 2-1.
The Tigers scored a pair to take the lead in the bottom half. Ryar Rinehart knocked a two-run double in the fifth to put Kalamazoo back up, 4-3. The Hornets really got things going in the sixth, putting up six runs to push the lead to 10-3.
DePauw got one back in the bottom half, but Kalamazoo added three more in the seventh. The Tigers scored one more in the bottom of the eighth.
Newland had three hits, while Jackson Isaacs and Caleb Moore both had two for the Hornets. Rinehart led Kalamazoo with three RBI.
Ben Van Nes (3-0) took the win with an inning of scoreless relief, with Owen Schihl working a scoreless seventh and Parker Aten earning the final four outs with no runs allowed.
Kalamazoo (16-2) heads back home to open up MIAA play on Friday against Trine University (4-15) at 4 p.m. at Woodworth Field.
