DAVENPORT, Fla.– The Kalamazoo College baseball team fought back and kept the runs coming in the late stages against Elmhurst University at the RussMatt invitational Tuesday, winning 15-4.
Elmhurst took the lead on a solo home run in the bottom of the second. Alex Fenkell tied things up in the fourth with an RBI single scoring Cade Preissing.
The Blue Jays regained the lead with three runs in the bottom half. A solo shot by Ryar Rinehart in the sixth made it 4-2.
Robert Newland tied it up in the seventh with a two-run blast to left center. Jackson Isaacs put the Hornets ahead with an RBI double in the eighth, scoring Fenkell, and Kalamazoo added eight more runs with two outs to make it 13-4.
Preissing and Rinehart added solo bombs in the ninth to bring it to 15-4. The Hornets outhit Elmhurst, 18-6, in the win.
Fenkell, Newland and Preissing had three hits each for Kalamazoo, with Preissing and Rinehart both scoring three runs. Jack Friesen had three RBIs to lead the Hornets.
Robert Ahlgren (2-0) took the win on the mound with 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief with six strikeouts, followed by Parker Aten and Dillon Rodriguez both working a scoreless inning.
Kalamazoo (15-2) finishes its spring break trip facing DePauw (11-3) Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Davenport, Fla.
