DAVENPORT, Fla.– The Kalamazoo College baseball team came back and outlasted Ripon College in a slugfest Friday, winning 20-13.
Ripon started hot, scoring three runs in the first and four in the second around a Caleb Moore RBI double for the Hornets to take a 7-1 lead. Kalamazoo started the comeback with a four-run bottom of the third capped off by a three-run home run by Alex Fenkell.
Fenkell came through in a big way again with a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth as part of a five-run inning to put the Hornets up 10-7. Four runs by the Red Hawks in the top of the seventh put them back ahead, 11-10, but Kalamazoo batted around and then some in the bottom half, scoring nine for a 19-11 lead.
Ripon refused to go away, adding two more in the eighth. The Hornets answered with one in the bottom half to bring the score to 20-13.
Kalamazoo outhit the Red Hawks, 17-15, and drew 11 walks in the win.
Moore led the Hornets with four hits, scoring three runs with three RBIs. Fenkell's seven runs batted in were tied for the fifth-most in a single game in program history.
Along with Moore and Fenkell, Cade Preissing, Robert Newland, and Ryar Rinehart all scored three runs. Parker Aten was strong out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings, while Cole Bronoel-Cuthrell earned the win.
Kalamazoo (13-2) squares off against Carleton College (2-5) Saturday at 10 a.m.in Davenport, Fla.
