Mike Hume graduated with business and Spanish degrees from Kalamazoo College and was a four-year letterwinner for the men's lacrosse team. Now that his academic and athletic careers at K have ended, Hume intends to jump into the workforce with areas of international and digital marketing, pharmaceutical sales, and business analysis as options while being able to integrate his Spanish degree into his professional career.
"Kalamazoo College played a pivotal role in preparing me for my next steps through its unique educational experiences and supportive community, which shaped my approach to completing tasks, my transformative study abroad experience, and my involvement in sports, specifically lacrosse," said Hume. "Firstly, Kalamazoo College instilled in me the importance of completing small tasks before tackling larger ones. This approach was fundamental in academics and athletics, where I learned to manage my time effectively by prioritizing and accomplishing tasks incrementally. This skill has been invaluable in my career by enabling me to approach complex projects systematically and efficiently. Secondly, my study abroad experience at Kalamazoo College was transformative. I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture, gaining new perspectives and broadening my worldview. This experience enriched my personal growth and played a crucial role in shaping my career interests. Experiencing different educational systems and work environments sparked my passion for international marketing and sales, providing clarity and direction for my future career. Lastly, participating in lacrosse at Kalamazoo College exposed me to a supportive and close-knit community. Through the camaraderie and teamwork inherent in sports, particularly in a competitive setting, I developed strong relationships with teammates and coaches. This community provided encouragement, mentorship, and a sense of belonging that extended beyond the field. These relationships have continued to be a source of support and networking as I've navigated my career journey post-graduation."
Hume played significant minutes in all four years on the lacrosse field, ending his career as a two-way midfielder. This past year, he scored four goals and collected four assists for eight points while working in the defensive third of the field. In his career, Hume had seven goals and seven assists for 14 points offensively and collected 60 ground balls and 44 caused turnovers defensively. He is also a soon-to-be two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member.
"As a former lacrosse player at Kalamazoo College for four years, I gained invaluable experiences and skills that have shaped my personal and professional growth. Balancing rigorous practice schedules, travel for games, and academic responsibilities taught me effective time management and prioritization. I developed strong leadership abilities by setting examples for teammates on the leadership board for my time. Collaboration and teamwork were essential on the field, teaching me how to communicate effectively, adapt to different playing styles, and work towards common goals. Challenges such as injuries and losses fostered resilience and perseverance, which extend beyond athletics. Regular training sessions and games promoted physical fitness and overall well-being, showing me how important it is to take care of your body. Additionally, sports participation instilled values of sportsmanship, respect for opponents, and acceptance of outcomes with grace. The connections formed within the lacrosse community at Kalamazoo College created a supportive network that continues to enrich my life today," said Brunette about his athletic experience at Kalamazoo.
Hume studied abroad in Madrid, Spain, where he combined his time abroad with his Senior Integrated Project, where his research of the dynamic healthcare landscape in Madrid delved into the impact of digital marketing on international private hospitals, public hospitals, and a selected pharmacy. The study explored the critical role of digital marketing in shaping patient engagement, healthcare delivery, and institutional strategies. Through expert interviews and experiential analysis, it aimed to understand how digital marketing is re-configuring the healthcare narrative comprehensively. Hume also worked as an International Marketing Intern at HM Hospitales in 2023, where his primary responsibilities were translating and transcribing documents, articles, and videos to ensure effective communication with English-speaking patients.
"One of my most meaningful experiences at Kalamazoo College was undoubtedly my study abroad semester in Madrid, Spain," said Hume. "This experience was precious for several reasons, combining academic enrichment, personal growth, and cultural immersion. Firstly, studying abroad allowed me to apply the foundational skills I learned at Kalamazoo College in a real-world context. The college's emphasis on completing small tasks before big ones proved essential as I navigated through a new educational system and adjusted to living in a foreign country. This approach helped me manage coursework effectively while also exploring and enjoying the vibrant cultural offerings of Madrid. Living independently during my return visit last summer was another significant aspect of my experience. It allowed me to revisit and deepen my connection to the city and culture I had come to love during my study abroad semester. This period of independent living allowed me to further develop my self-reliance, problem-solving skills, and adaptability — all essential qualities that Kalamazoo College cultivated in me through its rigorous academic and extracurricular programs. Moreover, studying abroad in Madrid facilitated the formation of diverse friendships worldwide. Engaging with fellow international students and locals alike enriched my cultural understanding and broadened my perspective on global issues. These friendships enhanced my social experience and provided valuable networks and lasting connections that have continued to influence my personal and professional life beyond college."
When asked what Hume would tell a recruit interested in coming to Kalamazoo, he said you would jump into a competitive environment where you can develop as an athlete and an individual, learn crucial skills such as effective time management to balance athletics with academic commitments and gain leadership opportunities. Teamwork and collaboration are fundamental, teaching how to work closely with teammates towards shared goals while appreciating diverse perspectives and strengths. Athletics at Kalamazoo College also foster resilience and perseverance by overcoming challenges on and off the field. The competitive level at Division III ensures a challenging experience where athletes can push themselves to excel and achieve personal growth. Moreover, participating in sports at Kalamazoo College promotes physical fitness and health through regular training and competition. Lastly, athletes become part of a supportive community that extends beyond their college years, forging lasting connections with teammates, coaches, and supporters while making a meaningful impact on campus and beyond.
Hume wanted to ensure he acknowledged those who helped him along the way at Kalamazoo. "I would like to acknowledge Dr. MacLean for all she does in the Spanish Department, but more importantly, for being my SIP advisor. Dr. MacLean's expertise in the Spanish Department enriched my academic journey and inspired my passion for the Spanish language and culture. Dr. MacLean's mentorship went beyond academic advising; she took a personal interest in my growth and development, fostering a supportive environment where I could explore my academic interests and career aspirations. Her guidance during my SIP strengthened my research and writing skills and prepared me for future academic and professional challenges. I am grateful for Dr. MacLean's dedication and commitment to her students, as her mentorship has impacted my education. I want to express my deep gratitude to Professor Cynthia Carosella for her profound impact on my experience at Kalamazoo College. When I returned to campus in the Spring term of 2020, Professor Carosella became my first Spanish professor at K. Our connection quickly blossomed into a strong and meaningful relationship that grew over the years. Despite no longer being my professor, she consistently showed unwavering support and pride in my accomplishments within the Spanish department. One of the most unforgettable moments I cherish is when Professor Carosella gave me a heartfelt hug during the graduation ceremony as the faculty walked down the quad. Her gesture of encouragement and recognition meant the world to me and encapsulated her genuine care for her students. Even as I walked across the stage and left the quad that day, I carried with me the warmth and affirmation that Professor Carosella had bestowed upon me throughout my journey at Kalamazoo College. Her mentorship and encouragement have left an indelible mark on my academic and personal growth, for which I am immensely grateful."
