Bobby Samples graduated from Kalamazoo College with a business degree and was a four-year letterwinner for the men's basketball team. Now that her academic and athletic careers at K have ended, Samples intends to further his education at Guilford College in North Carolina by pursuing master's degrees in business administration and international sports management. His passion for sports and business made this an easy decision, and Samples believes this program will help equip him with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the sports industry.
"One of the most meaningful experiences I had at Kalamazoo College was being a part of the men's basketball team," said Samples. "Balancing the demands of athletics and academics was challenging but incredibly rewarding. This experience taught me the value of time management, perseverance, and teamwork. My professors played a significant role in my growth as a person, providing me with guidance and support both on and off the court. I believe that being a student-athlete at Kalamazoo College has made me a more well-rounded individual and has equipped me with the skills and mindset needed to excel in any endeavor I pursue."
Samples appeared in 60 games with 48 starts in his four seasons as a Hornet. He averaged 5.2 points per game offensively while shooting 32.7% from three and 72.0% from the free throw line. Samples also contributed 3.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and nearly a steal per game for Kalamazoo from the point guard spot. He scored a career-high 12 points and five steals against Alma, grabbed 10 rebounds against Adrian, and totaled seven assists in multiple games. Samples was also involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee this past year as the Executive Board Operating Officer.
"Kalamazoo was instrumental in preparing me for my future endeavors. The rigorous academic curriculum, combined with the supportive environment and personalized attention from professors, helped me develop critical thinking skills, analytical abilities, and a strong work ethic. My internship, SIP, and study abroad experiences further enhanced my skills and provided me with practical knowledge that will be invaluable in my future career," said Samples about his academic experience at Kalamazoo.
Samples took advantage of opportunities outside of the classroom to enhance his experience at K. He completed an internship at Capitol National Bank in Lansing, where his primary responsibilities were to develop and execute social media strategies that would increase brand awareness and engagement. Samples also had opportunities to participate in board and loan committee meetings to gain valuable insight into business operations and financial analysis. He also studied abroad in Madrid, Spain, where he learned the importance of adaptability, cultural competency, and open-mindedness.
"As a student-athlete at Kalamazoo, I learned the importance of discipline, resilience, and dedication. These traits have not only helped me succeed in athletics but have also prepared me for the challenges I will face in my professional life," added Samples. "If I were talking to a recruit or someone interested in competing in athletics at K, I would tell them that they would learn the value of hard work, determination, and teamwork. Being a part of a collegiate athletic program is not just about competing in games; it's about personal growth, building lifelong friendships, and developing skills that will benefit you in all aspects of your life."
Samples wanted to ensure he acknowledged those who helped him along the way at Kalamazoo. "I would like to acknowledge Amy MacMillan, Kyle Morrison, Nick Giard, Matt Covault, and Ryan Behan for their meaningful contributions to my experience at Kalamazoo. Their guidance, support, and mentorship have been invaluable to me, and I am grateful for their impact on my personal and academic growth."
