Baseball loses one-run games to Rochester

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team lost a pair of one-run games to Rochester College on Thursday at Woodworth Field, 2-1 and 11-10.

Kalamazoo took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener. Mitchell VanKoevering tripled to right field and scored on a single by Scott Devine.

Rochester evened the score in the fifth and added another run in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Kalamazoo had a runner on second base in the bottom of the sixth and seventh, but failed to score the tying run.

Rochester had six hits to Kalamazoo's five. Scott Devine was 2-for-3 with the RBI. Ian Kobernick and Joey Aliotta also had singles.

Joe Cleary started on the mound and pitched four scoreless innings.

Kalamazoo scored first in the second game as well, but trailed 5-1 after three innings. The Hornets evened the score with four runs in the fourth inning, capped off by back-to-back triples by VanKoevering and Devine.

Each team scored a run in the fifth making it 6-6 until the visiting Warriors scored four runs in the top of the sixth to make it 10-6.

Kalamazoo responded with a pair of runs in the sixth as Ben Blomme drove in Kobernick and Carter Chandler with a single. Unfortunately, the Hornets failed to score again leaving runners on second and third. 

Rochester added another run in the top of the seventh to make it 11-8. The Hornets scored two runs in the seventh highlighted by Joey Aliotta's two-out double to left. Aliotta moved to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded as the game ended on a ground out.

Kalamazoo pounded out 17 hits in the game compared to 12 by Rochester. The Hornets left 12 runners on base compared to 10 for the Warriors.

Carter Chandler, Ian Kobernick and Joey Aliotta each had three hits. Marc Zughaib, Mitchell VanKoevering and Todd Bonniver each had two hits. VanKoevering, Devine and Blomme each drove in two runs.

Kalamazoo is scheduled to play its final home games on Friday with a doubleheader against Trine beginning at 2 p.m. It is also Senior Day for the Hornets. The series with Trine concludes on Sunday at Trine.
