ALMA, Mich.– The Kalamazoo College baseball team played a doubleheader at Alma College Saturday, losing both games in walkoff fashion.
Game 1: Alma 7, Kalamazoo 6 (11 innings)
The Hornets scored six runs in the top of the first, including a bases-clearing single by Jackson Isaacs to jump ahead early. Alma chipped away at the deficit with three runs in the second and two in the fifth before tying the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh.
After Logan Lockhart went five innings on the mound, Cole Bronoel Cutthrell threw two innings allowing one unearned run and Owen Schihl locked things down for three scoreless innings to take the game into the 11th inning. The Scots were able to push across one run in the 11th to walk it off.
Robert Newland had two hits, two walks and two stolen bases to lead the Kalamazoo offense. Caleb Moore and Lockhart had two hits as well, while Isaacs had a team-high three RBIs.
Game 2: Alma 4, Kalamazoo 3 (7 innings)
Alma scored first in game two, bringing home one run in the second. Newland hit an RBI double in the fifth to tie it, later scoring to put the Hornets ahead. Kalamazoo added one more in the sixth, but the Scots came back with two in the bottom half to tie it at 3-3.
Alma loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, and a single up the middle scored the winning run.
Newland collected three hits in game two to lead the Hornets, while Cade Preissing picked up two hits including a double.
Kalamazoo (29-6, 13-4) and Alma (24-11-1, 12-5) complete their series Sunday at 2 p.m. at Woodworth Field in Kalamazoo.
