Men's Soccer Receives Four Academic All-District Team Honors

Four Kalamazoo College men's soccer student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, announced on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Joey Basil, Junior Matuza, Evan Pollens-Voigt, and Simon Sawyer received the honor this season.

To earn the distinction of CSC Academic All-District honors, the student-athlete must be a sophomore, achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and appear in 90% of the team's games or start within 66% of the team's games.

Basil, a junior defender from Grand Haven, Mich. (Grand Haven), played and started all 17 games for the Hornets this year, playing a total of 1248 minutes. He served as a linchpin in the team's defense, which held opponents to 1.71 goals per game, and finished the season with eight shots, two on goal.

A junior midfielder from Troy, Mich. (Troy), Matuza played in 16 games for Kalamazoo this season, starting six and playing a total of 752 minutes. He scored one goal with one assist on the season, finishing with three shots, one on goal. This is Matuza's second consecutive Academic All-District selection.

Pollens-Voigt, a senior defender from Kalamazoo, Mich. (Loy Norrix), played and started in 14 games this season, and was on the pitch for 1208 minutes in total. In addition to his contributions on the back line for the Hornets, he was a regular target on corner kicks, scoring two goals on nine shots, six on goal. This is the third straight Academic All-District honor for Pollens-Voigt, who also won the MIAA's Zuidema Award and was an All-MIAA Second Team selection.

A sophomore defender from White Lake, Mich. (Detroit Catholic Central), Sawyer played and started 16 games this year, totaling 1364 minutes for Kalamazoo. Another major contributor to the Hornets' defense, Sawyer took one shot this season. His 1364 minutes played were second-most on the team behind goaltender Jackson Janderwski.

The Hornets finished the season 4-9-4 overall and 2-2-3 in MIAA play for fifth place in the conference.
