Softball Splits Two Games Against Wesleyan and Wisconsin-Stevens Point

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Kalamazoo College softball team continued its spring break trip with two more games against Wesleyan and Wisconsin- Stevens Point on Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 21). The Hornets first shutout Wesleyan 4-0 in game one before falling to the Pointers 4-1. 

GAME 1 - Kalamazoo 4, Wesleyan 0

The Hornets got the ball rolling in the first inning as the first six runners reached safely. Lizzy Rottenberk singled to center field to open the inning, and Lucy Hart brought her in with a double. The bases then loaded up as Sam Moss reached on a fielder's choice and singles by Brynna Garden and Bella Caza. Emma Newlove then worked a walk to collect an RBI.

Kalamazoo's other two runs were scored in the third inning. Garden picked up her second hit with a double to left field to begin the inning. Then Newlove continued her successful day with a two-run home run to deep center field. That was Newlove's first home run of her collegiate career. 

Sam Moss (4-2) was stellar in the circle, picking up her first complete game shutout of the season. In seven innings, Moss allowed just four hits and struck out six. 

Rottenberk was 2-3 with a walk and a run scored. Garden also had two hits with a double and a run scored. Newlove was responsible for three of the four RBI.

GAME 2 - Wisconsin-Stevens Point 4, Kalamazoo 1

The Pointers scored the first four runs of the game, with two in the second, one in the third, and one in the fifth. Two of the four runs were scored on wild pitches, while the other two came on a bases-loaded groundout and a single. 

The Hornets scored their one run in the sixth as Rottenberk led off the inning with a walk. She eventually ended up on third after a wild pitch and a ground out. Then, Garden came through with a single to center field that brought in Rottenberk. 

Jordan Cook (2-4) pitched all six innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits and three walks to go along with three strikeouts. 

Hart, Garden, and Newlove picked up the hits for Kalamazoo as Rottenberk and Jaycee Rider reached base via walks. Newlove's hit was a double and Garden collected the lone RBI.

The Hornets will finish the spring break trip with their last two games on Thursday (Mar. 23) against Tufts and Carleton.
