Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College baseball team defeated Alma College 3-1 in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament Presented by Collegiate Credit Union on Wednesday at Adrian.
Robert Newland put Kalamazoo up 1-0 with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. Kalamazoo held Alma scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Alma tied it with a home run. In the top of the ninth,
Caleb Moore tripled to drive in
Ryar Rinehart. Moore then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jackson Isaacs to make it 3-1. Alma's leadoff batter walked in the bottom of the ninth before
Jacob Davis retired the next three batters to close out the win.
Kalamazoo had seven hits in the game, while Hornet pitchers held Alma to five hits.
Logan Lockhart had two hits for Kalamazoo. Isaacs had a double in addition to his sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Carson Orvis struck out five while allowing one run on four hits in 6.1 innings.
Owen Schihl recorded the final two outs in the seventh to keep it a 1-1 game.
Robert Ahlgren pitched a scoreless eighth, while
Jacob Davis earned the save with two strikeouts in the ninth.
Kalamazoo improved to 31-9 overall with the win, tying the school record for wins in a season (2017, 2023). The Hornets will face tournament host and top-seed Adrian in the winner's bracket on Thursday at 1 p.m. Adrian defeated Albion 5-4 in 10 innings in Wednesday's first game.
