Kalamazoo College baseball earned three All-Region honors from D3baseball.com and four for the ABCA/Rawlings team on Tuesday, May 26.
Both publications had Robert Newland (OF) on their Second Team, while Cade Preissing (SS) earned Third Team recognition. Caleb Moore (C) was named Second Team by D3baseball.com, while Ryar Rinehart (1B) took home a Second Team honor from ABCA/Rawlings, which also named Carson Orvis (P) to the Third Team.
A junior from Pinckney, Mich. (Charyl Stockwell), Moore tied for second on the team in triples (2), was third on the team in hits (62) and RBI (49), and was tied for third in runs (42). Along with stellar defense behind the plate, he hit .344 with four home runs and stole eight bases on the season for his second consecutive Second Team All-Region award along with being First Team All-MIAA at catcher.
Newland, a senior from Bloomfield Hills, Mich. (Bloomfield Hills), broke the Kalamazoo program single-season records for runs scored (61) and stolen bases (46) this season, currently sitting #2 in NCAA III in stolen bases, #28 in hits (73) and #33 in runs. He led the Hornets in each of those categories, along with total bases (115), batting average (.386) and on-base plus slugging (1.072). Newland also set the Kalamazoo career hit by pitch record (57) this season en route to earning his first career All-Region award and a First Team All-MIAA honor in the outfield.
A sophomore from Swartz Creek, Mich. (Swartz Creek), Orvis led the team in innings pitched (73.1), strikeouts (79) and starts (14), tying for the team lead in wins (6). His 3.19 ERA ranked fifth in the MIAA and #118 in the country, while his 79 strikeouts are #28 in DIII this season. This is his first career All-Region award.
Preissing, a junior from Niles, Mich. (Buchanan), led the team in doubles (16) and was second on the team in hits (68), runs (51) and stolen bases (16). He hit .351 with two home runs and 24 walks, finishing third on the team in total bases (92) for his first All-Region selection and a Second Team All-MIAA spot at shortstop.
A senior from Rockford, Mich. (West Catholic), Rinehart broke Kalamazoo records for career home runs (42) and RBI (232), with his career RBI total tying for 15th-most in NCAA III history. This season, he was #8 in DIII with 70 RBI and #49 in home runs with 12. He also led the team in slugging percentage (.619), was third in doubles (13) and tied for third in runs (42) as he hit .330 with 24 walks. This is Rinehart's third season being named All-Region in his career.
The Hornets won a program-record 33 games this season, finishing with a 33-13 record after a nail-biting defeat to #1 Denison University in the NCAA III Regional Final. Kalamazoo earned its first ever at-large bid to the national tournament and only the second in MIAA history.
