Baseball Earns Two Academic All-District Honors

Kalamazoo College baseball had two student-athletes named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, announced on Tuesday, June 2. Jackson Isaacs and Robert Newland were recognized for their efforts on the field and in the classroom.

To earn the distinction of CSC Academic All-District honors, the student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and play in 90 percent of the institution's games played or start in at least 66 percent of the institution's games. For pitchers, a student-athlete must have made at least 17 appearances or pitched 35 innings.

A sophomore outfielder from Grand Rapids, Mich. (Grand Rapids Christian), Isaacs played in 45 games for the Hornets this season, starting 42. He led the team in walks (30), was second in on-base percentage (.479) and third in batting average (.359) with eight doubles, two triples, one home run, 32 runs and 30 RBI. This is his first Academic All-District award.

Newland, a senior outfielder from Bloomfield Hills, Mich. (Bloomfield Hills), started all 46 games for Kalamazoo this season. He broke the Kalamazoo program single-season records for runs scored (61) and stolen bases (46) this season, currently sitting #2 in NCAA III in stolen bases, #28 in hits (73) and #33 in runs. He led the Hornets in each of those categories, along with total bases (115), batting average (.386) and on-base plus slugging (1.072). He was named Second Team All-Region by both D3baseball.com and ABCA/Rawlings and was First Team All-MIAA in the outfield, and this is his third consecutive Academic All-District honor.

This season, the Hornets set a program record with 33 wins, going 33-13 and earning the program's first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA III tournament, just the second time an MIAA school has received an at-large bid. In Kalamazoo's third total appearance in the national tournament, the team reached the regional final for the first time.
