#19 Baseball Falls For First Time in 2024 to #13 Johns Hopkins

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The #19 Kalamazoo College baseball team fell for the first time this season to #13 Johns Hopkins in the first game of the Florida Trip on Thursday (Mar. 21). The Hornets now have a record of 9-1, and the Blue Jays improved to 10-5.

Scoring Plays

Johns Hopkins scored the first seven runs of the ball game to take a 9-0 lead heading into the middle of the seventh inning. The Blue Jays had a three-run home run in the second, a solo home run in the third, an RBI single in the fourth, a solo home run in the fifth, scored on an error in the sixth, and then a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Kalamazoo got the bats going in the bottom of the seventh inning as Lukas Bolton doubled down the left field line to bring in Robert Newland and Alex Fenkell. JHU brought in its final run of the game in the eighth with an RBI double.

The Hornets' big inning was in the bottom of the eighth when they sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs. Harrison Poeszat collected an RBI on a groundout, and Fenkell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Then, Cam Kelly and Newland both scored on two separate wild pitches. 

Pitching

Jacob Davis (2-1) took the loss after going five innings and surrendering six runs in his start. Most of the damage was due to the long ball, as he allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

Reece Omodio allowed one unearned run on an error and one hit in the sixth with two strikeouts. Owen Schihl, Matt Butterly, and Blake Parpart all threw in the seventh, and then Parpart got one more out in the eighth. Schihl allowed two runs, and Parpart gave up one. Kaden Sotomayor and Chase Cummins got the final four outs without allowing a run.

Hitting

Lukas Bolton was 2-3 with a double and two RBI. David Stechow, Tanner Hawkins, Cam Kelly, and Robert Newland all had one hit. Newland scored two runs and had two stolen bases. Harrison Poeszat and Alex Fenkell had the other two RBI.
