Baseball takes two from Calvin

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team swept a home doubleheader over Calvin on Saturday winning 4-3 in eight innings and 6-5 in game two. With Saturday's sweep the Hornets won three games overall to win the series.

Game One

In a scheduled 7-inning game, Kalamazoo won 4-3 in the eighth inning on Andre Gard's walk-off RBI single.

Calvin led 2-0 after three innings and 3-1 after five innings. The Hornets tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on Alex Fultz's 2-run home run. The Hornets had a chance to score in the bottom of the seventh but a potential game-winning ground ball was nullified by an out call at first base.

Conor Grant had one of his three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to get things going for the Hornets. A Calvin error put a second runner on base and then Andre Gard singled home Grant from second base for the game winner.

Chase Coselman hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to get the Hornets on the board.

Ryan Orr improved to 5-0 with the win in two innings of relief.

Game Two

Kalamazoo struck first in the bottom of the first, but the Knights led 2-1 after two innings. Kalamazoo evened the score in the fourth only to see Calvin pull ahead 5-2 in the fifth.

Kalamazoo scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead and then shut the door in the seventh for the win. Ryan Orr drove in two runs with a single to tie the game in the sixth. Todd Bonnivier then put the Hornets on top with an RBI single.

Kalamazoo had 15 hits in the game led by Jordan Wiley who went 4-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored.

Stefan Leclerc was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Ryan Orr, Connor Grant and Josh Reuter each had two hits.

Chase Shelbourne picked up the win in relief while Joe Giacalone retired the Knights in order in the seventh to earn the save.

Kalamazoo returns to action at home on Monday when the Hornets wrap up the series with Albion with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
