Milestone, shutout cap baseball's trip to Tucson

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. – The final game at the Tucson Invitational for the Kalamazoo College baseball team had it all—a complete game shutout, strong hitting and a career milestone—as the Hornets cruised to a 12-0 win over Oberlin College to improve to 7-2 on the season.

From the get-go, freshman starter Jacob Gilhaus was locked in on the bump for Kalamazoo retiring the first 10 batters he faced before allowing a single up the middle in the fourth inning. The Bloomington, Ill. native regrouped after allowing his first base runner and allowed just two more base runners, both hits, on the way to a seven-inning shutout. He recorded six strikeouts.

Not to be outdone by Gilhaus's strong outing, the Hornets had their bats going throughout the entire game but it was Ian Kobernick's two-run single in the top of the seventh that made the most noise. While giving the Hornets' an 8-0 lead with the single was an added bonus, Kobernick became the Hornets' all-time leader in hits with the single to left field. He stands alone at the top of the list with 169 hits passing Ryan Benjamin.

One batter later, Jack Clark launched his second home run of the Tucson trip over the left field wall.

Mitch VanKoevering had a day at the plate going 4-for-5 with an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Kobernick and Andre Gard ended the afternoon with two hits apiece.

The Hornets are set to travel back to Kalamazoo tomorrow afternoon before beginning Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play Saturday at Albion.
