Baseball sweeps Trine on first day of series

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team swept Trine, 6-1 and 14-2, on the first day of the four-game series.

Game One

With both teams being held scoreless through the first two and a half innings, Kalamazoo brokethrough in the bottom of the third in a big way.

With the bases loaded, Connor Grant singled through the ride side of the infield driving in David Kracht and Ian Kobernick. Singles from Brett Garwood and Jordan Wiley drove in three more runs in the inning and the Hornets led 5-0 heaeding to the fourth.

Kalamazoo tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth as Mitchell VanKoevering drove in Jack Clark on an RBI single.

Trine added a run in the top of the sixth but Ryan Orr provided another strong effort for the Hornets on the bump.

He threw seven innings of work and struckout eight, improving to 5-1 on the season.

Grant led the way offensively for the Hornets going 2-for-3. The team combined for seven hits.

Game Two 

Kalamazoo took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two before falling behind 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Kalamazoo responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth before exploding for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Hornets added two more runs in the sixth while holding Trine scoreless the rest of the way.

Kalamazoo pounded out 21 hits in the game while allowing eight.

Ian Kobernick and Mitchell VanKoevering each went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Kobernick had a pair of doubles while VanKoevering had one.

David Kracht, Jack Clark, Connor Grant, Josh Reuter, Jordan Wiley and Ryan Orr each had two hits in the game. Orr had a double and four RBIs. Wiley also had a double.

Aaron Schwark picked up his third win of the season in seven innings of work. Joe Giacalone, Garrett Swanson and Steve Simmons kept Trine off the board over the final two innings.

Kalamazoo and Trine conclude the series Sunday in Angola, Ind. beginning at 1 p.m.
