Baseball splits in first two against Hope

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HOLLAND, Mich. – After Friday's scheduled doubleheader was postponed to this afternoon, the Kalamazoo College baseball team picked up two wins to start its four-game set with Hope College on the campus of the Flying Dutch.

Game One

Scoring three runs in the top of the second courtesy of an Ian Kobernick single that drove in two runs and a David Kracht single which scored one, the Hornets rode standout starting pitcher Ryan Orr to a 5-2 win in the first game of the doubleheader.

Hope got two runs back in the bottom of the third, but Orr shut the Dutch down in the final four innings.

Throwing a seven inning complete game, Orr gave up the two runs on just five hits and struck out seven on the way to his fourth win of the season.

Kalamazoo added an insurance run in both the sixth and seventh innings. Kobernick picked up an RBI in the sixth while Nate Donovan had an RBI single in the seventh.

Each recorded multi-hit games with Kobernick driving in a team-high three runs.

Game Two

Following a strong pitching performance from Orr in game one, Aaron Schwark gave the Hornets another strong start in game two.

Schwark, who allowed just one hit in his first five innings of work, completed seven innings giving up three runs on six hits.

The Hornets struck first in game two taking a 1-0 lead, but it wasn't until the fifth inning when the Hornets' offense came to life. Seven different Hornets recorded hits in the top of the fifth as Kalamazoo scored eight runs and broke the game open with a 6-0 lead.

After tacking on two more in the sixth and taking an 8-0 lead, Hope rallied down the stretch. The Dutch scored three in the seventh and two in the eighth and trailed 8-5 heading to the ninth before striking for four more runs.

Brett Garwood led the way offensively for K going 3-for-4 from the dish. Kobernick, Connor Grant and Stefan Leclerc also recorded multiple hits in the loss.

Kalamazoo will look to close out the four game series with a pair of wins tomorrow afternoon when the two teams close out the series at Woodworth Field.
