Baseball sweeps doubleheader at Alma

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALMA - The Kalamazoo College baseball team swept an MIAA doubleheader at Alma on Monday, 14-6 and 6-5.

Kalamazoo led 6-2 in the third inning of the opener before Alma scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to even the score at 6-6. The Hornets scored the eventual game-winning run in the fifth before adding four runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to secure the 14-6 win.

Kalamazoo pounded out 15 hits in the game while also taking advantage of 10 walks and three hit batters. Alma was limited to eight hits, six of which came in the first three innings.

Anthony Shaheen was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. K.J. Schultz was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases.

Scott Devine, Adam McDowell, and David Menoian each had two hits. Devine drove in three runs while McDowell and Menoian each had an RBI.

Marc Zughaib reached base five times and scored three times.

Zach Popovich earned the win on the mound in relief, allowing just two hits over 3 2/3 innings.

In the second game, Alma led 2-1 after the first inning and held the lead until the fourth when Kalamazoo evened the score at 2-2.

The Scots responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, however, to take a 5-2 lead. Kalamazoo answered with four runs in the top of the fifth, capped off by Joey Aliotta's two-run triple to put the Hornets ahead, 6-5.

Kalamazoo threatened again in the top of the sixth, but was unable to add any insurance runs.

The Scots loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth before Phil Earls came on to record the final two outs for the Hornets as the game was then called on account of darkness.

Each team had ten hits in the game.

Scott Devine was 3-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases. Eric Glanz was 2-for-3 with a double. Marc Zughaib was also 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored.

Zack Cole earned the win in relief with Earls picking up the save.

Kalamazoo returns to action on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Holy Cross College at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend, Ind. starting at 2 p.m.
