ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College women's indoor track and field team competed in the GVSU Big Meet for its final tune up before the MIAA Indoor Championships in two weeks. The Hornets continued to show progress in the program's first season back after a more than 40-year shutdown.
Saturday events
Kalamazoo's distance medley relay team of Cate Cotter, Zenaida Sackett, Gwyneth Dunaway and Ava King ran the ninth-fastest time of any NCAA-DIII school this season at 12:18.25. Sackett also set a new personal best in the 800m at 2:28.02 to finish 36th out of 84 runners.
Grace Murphy ran at 11:08.12 in the 3000m for a new personal best mark, coming home 40th out of 75 runners. Ava Bechler (4.10) and Rachel Meston (3.72) both set new career bests in the long jump.
Dunaway added a season best in the 200m at 26.84, finishing 37th out of 62 runners. Zara Strauss another PR for the Hornets in the shot put at 10.10m.
Friday events
King ran a personal-best 4:59.61 in the mile run, climbing to #37 in NCAA-DIII this season. Nora O'Leary ran her first indoor 5,000m in 18:08.03, good for #82 in DIII on the year.
Maya Alkema (18:26.38) and Allison Mayer (18:28.14) both ran personal bests in the 5,000m as well. Annalise Bol ran the first 600m of her collegiate career, finishing in 1:55.14.
Kalamazoo women's indoor track and field will send two athletes to the MIAA Indoor Combined Events Championship on Monday at 11 a.m. at Alma, with the full team back in action at the MIAA Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday Feb. 27-28, hosted by Trine.
