ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College men's indoor track and field team competed in the GVSU Big Meet for its final tune up before the MIAA Indoor Championships in two weeks. The Hornets continued to show progress in the program's first season back after a more than 40-year shutdown.
Saturday events
Bram Derksen finished 12th out of 33 runners in the 60m hurdles at 8.85. Kalamazoo's distance medley relay team of Carson Cook, Mason Jett, Derksen and Drew Abbott earned the 28th-best time in NCAA-DIII this season at 10:36.58.
Jackson Janderwski led the six Hornets to run the 60m with a new personal best time of 7.56. Jeremy Salomon added a PR in the 400m at 52.54.
Jett also set a personal best time in the 800m at 1:58.61, finishing 39th out of 99 runners. Both Riley Shults (9:23.64) and Tyler VanderZanden (9:27.53) earned new career best times in the 3000m.
John Lonsway won his head and finished 45th overall out of 92 runners in the mile run with a personal best 4:37.08. VanderZanden (4:42.89), Nolan Park (4:45.98) and Shults (4:53.47) also set new PRs in the mile run.
Ethan Romey led Kalamazoo in both the shot put (12.72m) and the weight throw (10.62m). The Hornets' 4x400m relay team of Salomon, Connor Brown, Cook and Jett closed out the weekend with a new season best of 3:33.18.
Friday events
Jack Schneider was the fastest Kalamazoo runner in the 5,000m, finishing in 15:23.80, more than 30 seconds faster than his season-opening time on the same track. Henry Cox (15:34.67) and Sam King (15:56.47) both ran their first indoor 5,000m races as well.
Elliott Anderson ran his first collegiate 600m, finishing in 1:33.24.
Kalamazoo men's indoor track and field will be back in action at the MIAA Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28, hosted by Trine.
