The Kalamazoo College football team had eight players selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, announced on Tuesday, January 7
th. The student-athletes selected were
Raymond Cargill,
Tyler Houle,
Gabe Meyers,
Gabe Olivier,
Alex Pepin,
Sheldon Riley,
Jonah Spates, and
Adam Stapleton.
To earn this award, the student-athlete must be a starter or an important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA, have played in at least 90% or start in 66% of their team's competitions, and be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
Cargill, a sophomore linebacker from Grand Rapids, Mich. (Forest Hills Central), led the Hornets' defense this year with 47 solo tackles (73 total tackles), eight tackles for loss for 34 yards, and 3.5 sacks for a loss of 21 yards. Cargill received MIAA Defensive Player of the Week twice this season (9/30/24 and 11/4/24).
Houle, a senior wide receiver from Fort Gratiot, Mich. (Port Huron Northern) started in all 10 games for the Kalamazoo College Hornets this season. Houle was third on the team in receiving yards (276 yards), receptions (23) and touchdowns (two). Additionally, he averaged 12 yards per reception and 27.60 yards per game. Houle returned four kicks this season for 67 yards total.
Meyers, a senior defensive back from Shelbyville, Mich. (Martin) started in all 10 games for the Hornets. Meyers recorded 37 total tackles (26 solo) and two pass breakups. He had a season-high of six solo tackles on Oct. 26
th against Albion.
Olivier, a junior linebacker from Traverse City, Mich. (St. Francis) played in nine out of 10 games for Kalamazoo this season. Olivier tallied 24 total tackles (16 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss for four yards, and one sack for a loss of two yards. Olivier had a career-high of seven tackles on Nov. 9
th against Alma.
Pepin, a junior defensive back from Grandville, Mich. (Grandville) finished the year tied for second in interceptions and fifth in pass breakups. Pepin collected 18 total tackles (10 solo), two pass breakups, and one interception returned for 27 yards. Additionally, Pepin recorded a career-high of four solo tackles against Calvin on Sept. 28
th.
Riley, a senior running back from Brighton, Mich. (Brighton) led the Hornets' offense in all rushing categories. On the ground, Riley had 408 yards on 99 carries averaging 3.8 yards per carry and 41.67 yards per game, with five rushing touchdowns. Additionally, Riley caught 11 passes for 63 yards and one touchdown.
Spates, a senior wide receiver from Grand Rapids, Mich. (Forest Hills Central) finished the season second in all receiving categories. Spates finished the season with 47 catches for 588 yards and four touchdowns. On the season, he averaged 12.51 yards per catch and 58.80 yards per game. Spates was the primary punt returner on special teams with nine returns for 63 yards and collected eight kick returns for 149 yards. Additionally, Spates ends his time at Kalamazoo College ranked fourth in program history for receptions (172), sixth in receiving yards (2,019) and tied for eighth in touchdown receptions (13).
Stapleton, a senior linebacker from Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. (Detroit Jesuit) finished the season in second on the team in tackles for loss with 7.5 tackles for a loss of 13 yards, third in solo tackles (35) and assisted tackles (27). This season, Stapleton recorded 62 total tackles, two quarterback hurries, one pass breakup, and one interception.
