Football Falls to Trine in MIAA Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team dropped a 58-12 contest to Trine University Saturday evening in the MIAA opener at Angell Field.

The Hornets are now 1-3 on the season, including 0-1 in league action.

Kalamazoo trailed 27-0 early in the second quarter before getting on the board. After taking over on their own 14-yard line, Trey Richey found Evan Abberger for a 29-yard strike. A personal foul on Trine gave Kalamazoo 15 more yards. 

Facing second-and-13, Richey hit Kyler Maiorana for a first down. Abberger hauled in a short pass for fie yards, moving the ball to the 23-yard line. From there, Richey scampered 23 yards for the touchdown with 9:18 to play before halftime.  

In the third quarter, Kalamazoo started a drive at the Trine 43-yard line. On third-and-one, Carson Chapin rushed for five yards. Hayden Johnston hauled in a nine-yard pass from Richey before another run by Chapin gave the team a first down. Moments later, Chapin rushed for three straight plays and plunged into the end-zone on third-and-one for the score. 

For the game, Richey completed six passes for 98 yards. Brayden Ledin connected six passes for 66 yards. 

On the ground, Aaron Zekman had two catches for 62 yards while Abberger had a pair of receptions for 34 yards. On the ground, Richey registered 75 yards and a score on 12 attempts. Chapin had a touchdown on 10 attempts. Maiorana ran the ball 11 times for 36 yards. 

Zach Sykes led the defense with 10 total tackles. Silas Reese posted seven solo stops and had nine total tackles. Kyle Moore and Ron Lawrence each had a sack. 

The Hornets return to action next Saturday when they travel to Albion for a 1 p.m. contest.
