Football Wins 23-16 at Albion

ALBION, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team spoiled Albion's homecoming with a 23-16 victory in an MIAA clash Saturday.

The Hornets are now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in MIAA action. 

Head Coach John Krajacic's team scored 16 of the final 19 points of the game for the come-from-behind victory.

Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, Hayden Johnston caught a nine-yard pass from Brayden Ledin. The ensuing extra point tied the game at 7-7. The catch completed an 18-play, 75-yard drive that took 7:57 off the clock. During the drive, Kyler Maiorana rushed for a two-yard gain on fourth-and-one on the 43-yard line for a first down. After keeping the ball for much of the first quarter, Johnston hauled in the pass on the first play of the second stanza, tying the game. 

Down 13-7, Carsen Moat caught a six-yard pass to get things going. Gary Jones Jr., registered back-to-back catches for 15 yards. On third-and-seven, Moat caught an 11-yard pass from Ledin. Moments later, the duo connected again for a nine-yard gain on third down. Facing a third-and-one on the seven-yard line, Zekman was on the receiving end of a pass from Ledin for the score. 

Just past the midway point of the third quarter, Pawel Surowiec drilled a 22-yard field goal, pushing the margin to 17-13 at the 6:07 mark. 

With the score at 17-16, Carson Chapin caught an 11-yard pass. Zekman registered a 10-yard catch on the next play. On first-and-10, Zekman caught a 39-yard pass from Ledin for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 23-16 at the end of the third quarter. Neither team would score in the fourth frame.

For the game, Ledin hit 30-of-40 for 344 yards and three touchdowns. Zekman caught six passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Moat also crossed the 100-yard threshold with five catches for 103 yards. Johnston registered four catches for 37 yards and a score. 

On the ground, Trey Richey led the way with 32 yards. Maiorana had 10 attempts for 26 yards.

Defensively, Zach Sykes was tremendous. He accounted for four solo stops and 13 assists for 17 total tackles. He also recovered a fumble. Grant Anderson had 12 total tackles and forced a fumble. Jermaine Calloway also forced a fumble on the day. 

Moat averaged 36 yards per punt and had one inside the 20-yard line. 

After a bye week, the Hornets travel to Calvin on Saturday, Oct. 17, for a 12 p.m. contest.
