Men's Swimming and Diving Competes at MIAA Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's swimming and diving team wrapped up competition on the final day of the MIAA Championships at Hope on Saturday (Feb. 24). The Hornets finished in third place after 48 events with 480 points.

The final standings were Calvin in first (1,002 points), Hope in second (966 points), Kalamazoo in third, Albion in fourth (391 points), Alma in fifth (295 points), and Olivet in sixth (213 points).

Wednesday, Feb. 21

In the lone finals event of the day, the 800 Free Relay team of Daniel Koselka, Zach Butters, Avery Jones, and Ben Pickrel finished in fifth with a time of 6:59.41.

Thursday, Feb. 22

Kalamazoo had nine individuals place well enough in the prelims in the morning to move on to the finals that night. Jose Torres-Rios came away with a seventh-place finish at 316.35 points. Ben Pickrel also picked up a top-eight finish in the 200 IM after finishing eighth at 1:55.64.

The 200 Free Relay team finished in fourth place, as Andre Fouque, Daniel Koselka, Avery Jones, and Tim Karubas touched the wall at 1:41.77. The second Kalamazoo team finished in sixth place, with Justin Beckrow, Erik Danielson, Alden Ehrhardt, and Zach Heikka swimming a 1:28.77.

The first Hornet 400 Medley Relay team came in fifth after Ben Pickrel, Erik Danielson, Alden Ehrhardt, and Tim Karubas swam a 3:28.26. The second team finished seventh at 3:33.04 as Zach Heikka, Daniel Koselka, Andre Fouque, and Zach Butters were in the pool.

Friday, Feb. 23

Kalamazoo had 13 more individuals place well enough in the prelims in the morning to move on to the finals that night. Ben Pickrel and Zach Heikka picked up top-eight finishes in the 100 Back, with Pickrel coming in fifth at 51.42 and Heikka finishing seventh at 51.94. Jose Torres-Rios had a good day in the 3-meter dive, coming in fifth with 341.95 points. Erik Danielson also had a top-eight finish in the 100 Breast after coming in sixth at 57.96.

The 200 Medley Relay team finished in fifth place, as Ben Pickrel, Erik Danielson, Alden Ehrhardt, and Tim Karubas touched the wall at 1:34.56. The second Kalamazoo team finished in eighth place, with Fuzail Ahmed, Avery Jones, Andre Fouque, and Zach Butters swimming a 1:39.34.

Saturday, Feb. 24

Kalamazoo had 11 more individuals place well enough in the prelims in the morning to move on to the finals that night.

Ben Pickrel had the best finish of any Hornet at the conference meet after coming in third in the 200 Back at 1:51.33. Zach Heikka and Fuzail Ahmed also had top-eight finishes in the 200 Back, as Heikka came in seventh at 1:56.35 and Ahmed finished eighth at 2:01.35. Erik Danielson finished sixth in the 200 Breast at 2:08.58. 

The Hornets had 33 individuals place well enough in the prelims to move on to the finals and 19 top-eight finishes at the conference meet.
