Football Wins Opener 24-7 over Oberlin

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team won its season opener 24-7 over Oberlin College Saturday afternoon at Angell Field.

The game was less than five minutes old when lightning struck in the area forcing a delay in the game. Heavy rain ensued while the lightning continued before play was allowed to resume nearly two hours later. 

After a scoreless first quarter, Kalamazoo got on the board first midway through the second quarter when Zach VanFaussien rushed for a 16-yard touchdown.

With just 24 seconds remaining the half VanFaussien connected with Jared Pittman for a 34-yard touchdown to put the Hornets up 14-0 heading into halftime.

Greg Kearns made it 17-0 Kalamazoo with a 25-yard field goal midway through the third quarter.

The visiting Yeomen finally got on the board with a 3-yard touchdown run with 14:11 left in the fourth quarter making it a 17-7 game.

Kalamazoo responded right away as Pittman scored on a 7-yard run to put the Hornets back on top 24-7, the eventual final.

VanFaussien finished 14-of-25 passing for 149 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions.

Zak Zagon made three catches for 55 yards. Ethan Kubik also had three catches for 18 yards. Raekwon Castelow, Dylan Padget and Anthony Giovanni each made two catches.

Pittman led the Hornets in rushing with 88 yards on 16 carries. Castelo had 66 yards on four carries.

Jacob Chantres led the defense with seven tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

Jake Osen, Jakob Frederick and Alex Stockwell each had six tackles. Frederick and Stockwell each had asack while Sypniewski had a forced fumble.

Kalamazoo returns to action at home next Saturday, Sept. 8 against Greenville at 4 p.m.
