Box Score The Kalamazoo College football team won its season opener 29-28 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday.
Rose-Hulman led 8-7 after the first quarter, but Kalamazoo outscored the Engineers 15-7 in the second quarter to take a 22-15 lead.
Kalamazoo led 29-15 after the third quarter, but Rose-Hulman came fighting back with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The second touchdown came with 2:15 left in regulation and gave Rose-Hulman a chance to tie or pull ahead, but the extra point attempt was fumbled leaving Kalamazoo with the 29-28 advantage.
Rose-Hulman's onside kick was bobbled by Kalamazoo, but quickly covered up by Jimmy Frye, allowing the Hornets to run out the clock to secure the win.
Aaron McGuire was 16-of-29 passing for 246 yards with two interceptions. The sophomore quarterback also gained 111 yards rushing on 25 carries with three touchdowns.
Dimeko Price gained 81 yards on 21 carries. Colin Leffert scored the Hornets' first touchdown on a three-yard run in the first quarter.
Josh Wise had five catches for 79 yards. Alex Dietrich had 68 yards receiving on two catches, including a 62-yard reception in the second quarter.
Blake Simon led the Hornet defense with seven tackles, including two for lost yardage. Connor Rzeznik also had seven tackles with one for loss. Brett Thomas also finished with seven tackles including a quarterback sack. Ryan Gregory and Dylan Zerki each had an interception.
Kalamazoo put up 462 yards of total offense to Rose-Hulman's 433. Rose-Hulman turned the ball over four times (2 fumbles, 2 interceptions) while Kalamazoo had two turnovers on fumbles.
Kalamazoo returns home to open newly renovated Angell Field next Saturday, Sept. 8. The Hornets host Manchester College with a 1 p.m. start time.
