KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team opened the season with a tough 40-10 loss to Kenyon College Saturday afternoon at Angell Field.
Brayden Ledin led the Hornets in passing with 153 yards (17-31) with a two-yard passing TD. Ledin also led the team in rushing with 27 yards on 11 carries.
After finding themselves down by two in the first quarter, the Hornets took the lead by way of a 25-yard field goal by
Cameron Lewis. The drive started when CB
Silas Reese intercepted a pass from Owls' QB Drew Morgan. Reese returned the ball four yards and the ensuing drive completed a 10-play, 48-yard lead change that took 4:17 off the clock.
Keynon retook the lead with 7:03 left in the half and added 10 consecutive points to close out the half up 12-3.
The second half began with an opening drive punt by Kalamazoo. The Hornets found the ball back in their hands after a four-play follow-up drive by the Owls. The home team started on their own 26-yard line and orchestrated a 13-play, 74-yard touchdown drive capped by a two-yard pass from Ledin to
Kyler Maiorana. Lewis tacked on the extra point following the touchdown drive that took 4:44 off the clock pulling Kalamazoo within two, 12-10.
The visitors answered and stretched their lead to 19-10. The Owls added 21 more points in the fourth quarter on their way to victory.
For the game,
Aaron Zekman and
Carsen Moat each hauled in five catches for 51 and 50 yards, respectively. Maiorana had two receptions for 24 yards and the TD catch.
Trey Richey rushed four times for 14 yards and
Thomas Shemwell added six yards to the rushing attack on seven carries.
Zach Sykes led the defense with 10 total tackles - one of which was for a loss.
Raymond Cargill had nine total tackles for the Hornets' defense. Reese added the interception.
On special teams,
Carsen Moat placed two of his 10 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Jack Hogan had six kick returns for 109 yards.
The Hornets return to action next Saturday when they host Rose-Hulman at 1 p.m.
