KALAMAZOO, Mich.– The Kalamazoo College baseball team split a doubleheader against The University of Olivet Saturday for Senior Day and the final games of the regular season.
Game 1: Olivet 2, Kalamazoo 1
Game one started out as a pitchers' duel with no score through the first seven innings. After Kieran Crossley was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the eighth, pinch runner Cam Kelly came around to score on an RBI single by Robert Newland to make it 1-0 Kalamazoo.
Two errors by the Hornets led to two runs for Olivet in the top of the ninth as the Comets rallied for the win.
Logan Lockhart was strong on the mound, delivering seven scoreless innings scattering three hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Owen Schihl (4-2) took the loss with two unearned runs allowed in 1 1/3 innings.
Game 2: Kalamazoo 5, Olivet 1
Kalamazoo scored three runs in the bottom of the first on three hits and two Olivet errors. The Comets got one back with a home run in the second.
The Hornets added two more runs in the fifth, and the pitching staff did the rest in keeping Olivet off the board.
Liam Regan was the lone player with multiple hits in game two, while Ryar Rinehart scored two runs.
Jacob Davis threw 4 1/3 innings to start on the mound, allowing one run and striking out five batters to reach 200 career strikeouts. Parker Aten (4-1) earned the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless work with two strikeouts.
The Hornets played all 12 seniors across the doubleheader: Liam Regan, Ryar Rinehart, Alex Fenkell, Logan Lockhart, Robert Newland, Charlie Peterson, Daniel Beccari, Dillon Rodriguez, Matt Butterly, Cam Kelly, Ben Van Nes, Gabe Sokol and Jacob Davis (fifth year). The dozen Hornets enjoyed the winningest four-year span in program history, with 119 wins over the past four seasons.
Kalamazoo finishes the regular season 30-9 and 14-7 in MIAA play, earning the #3 seed in the MIAA Tournament Presented by Collegiate Credit Union, which will be hosted by Adrian College next weekend.
