KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team was defeated 61-44 by Calvin University inside the Anderson Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.
Kalamazoo got off to a fast start and led 11-5 early before trailing 15-11 at the end of the first quarter. Calvin outscored Kalamazoo 19-7 in the second to take a 34-18 lead into halftime.
Calvin led 48-28 after the third quarter. Kalamazoo battled back in the fourth and cut the deficit to 12 (54-42) with 2:52 remaining but was unable to get any closer in the defeat.
Calvin shot 36.1 percent overall compared to 32.6 percent by Kalamazoo. The Knights made 15-of-18 free throws compared to 11-of-17 by the Hornets. Calvin held a 38-36 advantage in rebounds including 13-8 on the offensive end.
Sophia Moir scored seven points in the first quarter and led Kalamazoo with 13 for the game along with eight rebounds.
Ruby Hogan scored 11 points with six rebounds and six assists.
Lauren Vanderstelt finished with eight points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
Semaj' Robertson added seven points with three rebounds.
Makayla Allen scored five points off the bench.
Kalamazoo is back in action at Adrian on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m.
