ADRIAN, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team won 77-72 in double overtime at Adrian College Wednesday night. The Hornets won the previous meeting 66-65 in overtime in Kalamazoo on Jan. 7.
Kalamazoo jumped out to an early lead and led by as many as 15 (19-4) in the first quarter before leading 24-14 at the end of one. Adrian battled back and trailed 31-27 at halftime.
The Bulldogs pulled ahead late in the third before the teams ended the quarter tied 39-39. Adrian led by as many as five early in the fourth quarter before Kalamazoo came back to take a six point lead (54-48) with 1:42 left in regulation. The Bulldogs scored eight of the next 10 points including a free throw with five seconds remaining to make it 56-56 and send the game to overtime.
Each team held a slim lead in the first overtime period before tying the game back up at 61-61 with 55 seconds remaining. Each team missed a shot to go ahead and the game went to a second overtime.
Adrian hit a 3-pointer to start the second overtime but a pair of three's by Kalamazoo gave the Hornets the lead with 3:16 remaining. Adrian cut it to one (67-66) with 2:01 left but could not tie or regain the lead in the 77-72 defeat.
Kalamazoo shot 37.5 percent overall compared to 23.3 percent by Adrian. Kalamazoo made 9-of-30 3-pointers compared to 4-of-22 by Adrian. The Hornets sank 20-of-28 free throws compared to 34-of-42 by the Bulldogs.
Kalamazoo held a 47-42 advantage in rebounds.
Semaj' Robertson led Kalamazoo with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Lauren Vanderstelt scored 17 points with 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
Sophia Moir added 15 points with seven rebounds and four assists.
Ruby Hogan fouled out with 15 points and six rebounds.
Kalamazoo returns home to face Albion College on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m.
