PASADENA, Calif. – The Kalamazoo College baseball team won its season opener 14-4 in seven innings at Caltech on Friday.
Kalamazoo scored a run in the second and two in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Hornets went up 6-0 in the top of the fifth before the Beavers plated four runs in the bottom half.
The Hornets exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth and held Caltech scoreless in the sixth and seventh to end the game with the 10-run rule.
Kalamazoo put together 13 hits in the game while Caltech had seven.
Robert Newland finished 3-for-5 with a double, triple, and two RBIs.
Cade Preissing,
Caleb Moore,
Logan Lockhart, and
Jack Friesen each had two hits in the game. Moore led the way with four RBIs. Preissing scored three times in the leadoff spot.
Lockhart doubled and drove in two runs.
Cam Kelly also had a double.
Friesen also had a triple and two RBIs.
Kalamazoo tied a school record with 12 stolen bases in the contest.
Cade Preissing led the way with four.
Ryar Rinehart and
Caleb Moore each had two.
Robert Ahlgren picked up the win, striking out five and walking one in 4.2 innings.
Cole Bronoel-Cuthrell and
Gavin Stewart combined for a scoreless final 2.1 innings.
The two teams are back in action with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. PST.
