Women's Basketball Defeats Adrian 66-65 in Overtime

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team defeated Adrian College 66-65 in overtime inside Anderson Athletic Center Wednesday night.

Kalamazoo scored the first six points of the game and led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets, which led for 38:11 minutes in the game, led by as many as seven points in the second quarter before taking a 27-24 lead into halftime.

Kalamazoo led by as many as five in the third quarter before Adrian finally tied it up at 38-38 with 4:12 left in the quarter. The Bulldogs scored the next five points before leading 45-44 at the end of three. Kalamazoo regained the lead at the start of the fourth quarter and led by as many as five twice, including 58-53 with 2:01 left in regulation. Adrian hit a three-pointer with 1:14 on the clock before scoring the tying bucket with 13 seconds left. After a Kalamazoo turnover, Adrian was unable to get a shot off in the final seconds sending the game to overtime. 

Kalamazoo scored the first basket of overtime and led by four (64-60) with 1:53 remaining. Adrian went on a 5-0 run to take the lead with 1:03 left. Turnovers by both teams led to a fast break layup by Ruby Hogan with 11 seconds left. Adrian's final shot was off the mark as Kalamazoo emerged with the 66-65 win.

Kalamazoo shot a season-best 42.9 percent overall despite making just 2-of-15 three-pointers. Adrian shot 39.7 percent overall with 6-of-14 from behind the arc. The Bulldogs went 13-for-21 at the free throw line. Kalamazoo made 10-of-12. The Hornets outrebounded Adrian 44-31 overall, 16-11 on the offensive end. 

Lauren Vanderstelt led Kalamazoo with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Ruby Hogan posted a double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Semaj' Robertson added eight points and two assists. Alyse Baughman scored six points with three rebounds. Taylor Dinda finished with four points, six rebounds and five assists. Genevieve Nagel scored two points with six rebounds and two blocked shots.

Kalamazoo returns to action next Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Calvin.
