CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College baseball team split a doubleheader with Calvin on Saturday. Kalamazoo won the opener 3-2 before dropping the series finale 12-2. The games were moved to Davenport University's Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex due to field conditions in Kalamazoo.
Game One – Kalamazoo 3, Calvin 2
Kalamazoo scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on sacrifice flies by
Caleb Moore and
Tanner Hawkins. After a Calvin run in the second, Hawkins drove in another run on a sacrifice fly to give Kalamazoo a 3-1 advantage. Calvin scored its second run in the sixth but left a runner stranded on third. The Knights did not get another runner past second during the final three innings.
Kalamazoo had five hits in the game to Calvin's four.
Logan Lockhart led Kalamazoo with two hits.
Ryar Rinehart had a double.
David Stechow had a triple.
Lockhart also earned the win on the mound, striking out eight and allowing two runs in six innings.
Ben Van Nes pitched a scoreless seventh.
Owen Schihl allowed one hit over the final two innings for the save.
Game Two – Calvin 12, Kalamazoo 2
Calvin scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth.
Ryar Rinehart tied it in the bottom half with a solo home run to right field. Calvin pulled ahead again in the sixth before
Caleb Moore's RBI single in the bottom half evened it up at 2-2. The score remained tied until the top of the ninth when Calvin scored 10 runs, aided by six bases loaded walks. The Hornets were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth.
Calvin outhit Kalamazoo 12-7 in the game.
Caleb Moore finished with three hits including a double.
Cooper Mills had a triple.
