Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College softball team split their doubleheader with Benedictine (IL) on Thursday afternoon. The Hornets fell 6-4 in game one before bouncing back and winning game two 4-2.
Kalamazoo improves to 11-7 on the season.
Game One – L, 6-4
The Hornets struck first when
Bella Caza singled to left field, driving in
Jordan Wesaw. Benedictine answered with six runs across the third and fourth innings on four hits.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Hornets cut the deficit to make it a 6-4 game.
Alyssa Hinkley started the rally with a sacrifice fly to right field to push
Shelby Bennett across the plate.
Delaney Lee followed with a single to right-center, scoring
Macy Ward, and
Lily Evans capped it off with a double to center field to bring in Lee.
Jordan Cook started in the circle and took the loss, bringing her record to 2-3 for the season.
Bella Caza led the offense as she went 2-3 with an RBI.
Delaney Lee and
Lily Evans each recorded a hit and an RBI in game one.
Game Two – W, 4-2
The Eagles were first to drive in a run in game two off a double to left field. The Hornets responded back quickly as
Landrie Fridsma lined a shot up the middle to drive in
Brenna Fisher to tie the game at one a piece in the bottom of the first.
Kalamazoo pulled ahead in the second when
Jaycee Rider singled up the middle, scoring
Emma Newlove for a 2-1 lead.
Macy Ward provided some cushion in the fifth, doubling to right-center to drive in
Jordan Wesaw and
Landrie Fridsma, extending the lead to 4-1.
The Eagles managed to add a run in the top of the seventh but couldn't complete the comeback.
Brenna Fisher and
Landrie Fridsma both went 2-3, Fridsma with an RBI.
Macy Ward went 1-3 with 2 RBIs, while
Jordan Wesaw,
Emma Newlove, and
Jaycee Rider each added a hit.
Maddy Vrba earned the win, allowing eight hits, two runs while striking out two. Vrba is now 4-2 in the circle.
The Hornets return to action on Sunday, April 6
th, as they take on #7 Trine in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
