Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College softball team swept Alma in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, winning game one 6-0 and game two 6-2.
With the victories, the Hornets improved to 21-13 overall and 9-5 in MIAA Conference play. Their 21st win also ties the program record for most wins in a single season.
Game One, W – 6-0
Kalamazoo struck early, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Landrie Fridsma doubled to drive in
Brenna Fisher, then scored herself on an error.
In the third,
Jordan Wesaw singled to right field to bring home Fisher, and
Emma Newlove followed with a two-run homer to center, extending the lead to 5-0.
Bella Caza capped off the scoring in the fifth inning with an RBI single up the middle to drive in Wesaw.
Maddy Vrba earned the win (8-4) in the circle, pitching all seven innings while allowing just five hits and striking out three.
Bella Caza led the Hornets' offense as she went 3-2 with one RBI, followed by
Macy Ward, who also went 2-3.
Jordan Wesaw and
Landrie Fridsma both added one hit and one RBI.
Game Two, W – 6-2
In game two, the Hornets struck first with a run in the opening inning, as
Macy Ward singled through the left side to drive in
Brenna Fisher.
The Scots responded back with a run of their own in the bottom of the half off a single down the right field line.
Kalamazoo pulled ahead in the third inning, adding two more runs.
Emma Newlove singled down the third base line to bring home
Landrie Fridsma, and
Bella Caza followed with a sacrifice fly to score
Jordan Wesaw, giving the Hornets a 3-1 advantage.
In the fourth, Newlove doubled to left field, driving in two more runs, and Ward added another RBI with a single to score Newlove, extending the lead to 6-1.
Alma recorded one run in the sixth inning off a double to right center, but was unable to complete a comeback.
Jordan Cook earned the win (6-6) in the circle, striking out three and allowing nine hits within seven innings.
Offensively,
Jordan Wesaw led the way, going 3-4.
Macy Ward and
Emma Newlove each contributed two hits and two RBIs.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday, May 3
rd, as they take on Adrian in their final doubleheader of the regular season beginning at 1:00 p.m.
