Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College softball team swept Albion in their doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Hornets took game one 4-2 before defeating the Britons 9-0 in five innings.
Kalamazoo improves to 19-13 overall and 7-5 in MIAA Conference play.
Game One, W – 4-2
Albion scored first in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead. Kalamazoo responded back in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly from
Jordan Wesaw to bring in
Brenna Fisher and tie the game at one apiece heading into the second inning.
The Hornets tacked on another run in the second inning off a sacrifice fly from
Maddie Potts to drive in
Macy Ward and take a 2-1 lead. In the third inning, Wesaw reached on an error to score
Landrie Fridsma and take a two-run lead.
In the fourth inning,
Shelby Bennett laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Ward and make it a 4-1 advantage. The Britons responded back in the top of the sixth inning with one run but were unable to make a comeback.
Jordan Cook got the start in the circle and earned her fifth win of the season, while striking out five and allowing six hits through seven innings.
Jordan Wesaw led the Hornets' offense as she went 1-2 with two RBIs, followed by
Maddie Potts, who went 1-2 with one RBI.
Brenna Fisher,
Landrie Fridsma, and
Bella Caza each added a hit for the Hornets.
Game Two, W – 9-0
The Hornets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off an
Emma Newlove single up the middle to drive in
Landrie Fridsma. In the second inning,
Brenna Fisher singled up the middle to score
Shelby Bennett.
Emma Newlove doubled to right center in the third inning to push
Jordan Wesaw across the plate and take a 3-0 lead. The Hornets added on another run in the fourth inning off a single up the middle by Fridsma.
Kalamazoo broke it open in the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead.
Bella Caza started the inning off with a single through the right side to drive in Newlove followed by a double from Bennett to send Hinkley across the plate. Fisher singled down the left field line to drive in two more runs, while
Jordan Wesaw capped off the inning with a double to score Fisher.
Maddy Vrba got the start in the circle and recorded the win (7-4), while striking out two and allowing just one hit within 4 innings.
Brenna Fisher and
Emma Newlove led the offense as they both went 3-4, Fisher with three RBIs and Newlove with two.
Jordan Wesaw went 2-4 with one RBI,
Shelby Bennett went 2-3 with an RBI, and
Landrie Fridsma and
Bella Caza both recorded one hit and an RBI in game two.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday, April 26
th, as they host Alma in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
