Hornets Split Doubleheader with North Park

Chicago, Ill. – The Kalamazoo College softball team splits their Monday doubleheader with North Park, dropping game one 11-10 before defeating the Vikings 9-6 in game two. The Hornets are now 17-13 overall.
 
Game One – L, 11-10

The Hornets came out strong in the top of the first inning, jumping to an early 3-0 lead. Landrie Fridsma opened the scoring with an RBI single up the middle, driving in Brenna Fisher. Jordan Wesaw followed with a triple to right-center to plate Fridsma, and Emma Newlove capped the inning with a double to left, bringing Wesaw home.

North Park responded back in the bottom half with a run off a double to left field.

Kalamazoo extended its lead in the second, putting up five more runs to make it 8-1. Fridsma sparked the rally again, this time with a triple to center that scored Fisher. Newlove followed with a three-run homer to left, driving in Fridsma and Wesaw. Bella Caza wrapped up the inning with a double to right that brought in Macy Ward.

The Hornets added their final run in the fourth inning on a Caza single to center, stretching the lead to 10-1. From there, North Park held Kalamazoo scoreless and mounted a comeback, scoring 10 runs on six hits across the final four innings.

Emma Newlove led the Hornets' offense as she went 3-5 with four RBIs, followed by Brenna Fisher, who also went 3-5. Landrie Fridsma drove in three RBIs going 2-4, while Jordan Wesaw went 2-4 with one RBI, and Bella Caza 2-4.

Jordan Cook got the start in the circle, striking out four and allowing seven hits over four innings pitched. Cecilia Schihl suffered the loss (2-2), striking out one.

Game Two – W, 9-6

In game two, North Park jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Hornets responded back immediately in the top of the third with five runs of their own. Landrie Fridsma drove in Lily Evans on a fielder's choice, followed by an RBI single from Emma Newlove to bring in Brenna Fisher.

Bella Caza knocked in Fridsma, and Macy Ward followed with a double to score Newlove. Maddie Potts capped off the rally with a single up the middle to score Ward, giving Kalamazoo a 5-4 edge.

The Vikings tied it at five apiece in the bottom of the third off a sacrifice bunt. Kalamazoo regained the lead in the fourth with two more runs. Jordan Wesaw singled up the middle to score Fisher, and Caza followed with a single to right to bring home Wesaw, making it 7-5.

North Park tacked on one final run in the bottom half to cut the lead to 7-6.

The Hornets sealed the win in the fifth inning with back-to-back home runs from Maddie Potts and Ella Neumann, extending the lead to 9-6.

Bella Caza and Maddie Potts led the Hornets' offense as they both went 2-3 with two RBIs. Emma Newlove and Macy Ward went 2-4 with one RBI, followed by Ella Neumann, who went 1-1 with one RBI.

Potts also got the start in the circle and earned the win (4-1), while Jordan Wesaw picked up her first save of the season.

The Hornets return to action on Thursday, April 24th, as they host Albion in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
