ANGOLA, Ind. – The Kalamazoo College baseball team swept a doubleheader over Trine on Saturday while completing the series sweep of the Thunder. Kalamazoo improved to 20-11 overall (8-7 MIAA), marking the Hornets' fifth consecutive year reaching 20 or more wins.
Game One – Kalamazoo 13, Trine 7
Kalamazoo scored one in the first, two in the fifth and seven in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead. Facing a run-rule decision in the bottom of the seventh, Trine rallied for five runs to extend the game. Kalamazoo led 12-7 after the eighth and 13-7 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Ben Van Nes struck out all three Thunder batters in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
Kalamazoo outhit Trine 12-7.
Cooper Mills led the Hornets with three hits including a double. He also scored three runs, drove in two and stole a base.
Caleb Moore had two doubles while driving in four runs.
Logan Lockhart also had two doubles and drove in three runs.
Lockhart also earned the win on the mound, striking out eight and allowing just two hits in six innings.
Game Two – Kalamazoo 8, Trine 7
Kalamazoo scored a run in the top of the first but trailed 4-1 after the second inning. The Hornets tied it with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before taking an 8-4 lead in the top of the sixth. Trine scored one in the bottom half and two in the seventh to make it 8-7. Kalamazoo got out of a jam in the seventh and held on for the 8-7 win.
Trine finished with 13 hits compared to 10 by the Hornets.
Caleb Moore finished with three hits including a triple and an RBI.
Cooper Mills and
David Stechow each had two hits.
Logan Lockhart hit a 3-run home run in the sixth to put Kalamazoo up 8-4.
Cole Bronoel-Cuthrell pitched 4.1 innings to earn the win in relief.
Logan Lockhart closed out the ninth for the save.
