Hornets Sweep Doubleheader Against St. Mary's (Ind.)

Head Coach Kelli Duimstra earns 100th career win

Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College softball team swept its Sunday doubleheader against St. Mary's (Ind.), winning 12-4 (in six innings) and 4-3. With the victories, the Hornets improve to 13-11 overall and 2-4 in MIAA Conference play.

Game One, W – 12-4 (6 innings)

The Hornets jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Bella Caza ripped a triple down the right field line to clear the bases sending Macy Ward, Emma Newlove, and Jordan Wesaw across the plate.

The Belles responded back in the next inning of a Hornet error to make it a 3-1 game.

In the third inning, the Hornets added on three more runs to take a 6-1 lead. Newlove took advantage of a wild pitch to score the first, followed by a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Hinkley to send in Ward. Jaycee Rider finished the inning with a double to center field to drive in Caza.

Kalamazoo continued to pile on the runs in the fourth inning. Newlove led off with a solo home run, followed by an RBI single from Maddie Potts and a two-run single from Hinkley to stretch the lead to 10-1.

St. Mary's battled back in the fifth inning, scoring three runs off a double and a 2-run home run to make it a 10-4 game.

Landrie Fridsma walked it off with a single up the middle to push Rider and Hinkley across the plate to secure the 12-14 mercy rule win in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Maddy Vrba picked up her fifth win of the season, striking out five batters and allowing seven hits over six innings.

Bella Caza led the Hornets offense as she went 2-2 with three RBIs. Alyssa Hinkley went 1-2 with 3 RBIs, followed by Landrie Fridsma, who recorded two RBIs.

Emma Newlove and Jaycee Rider both contributed two hits and one RBI, while Maddie Potts went 1-3 with one RBI. The Hornets totaled 14 hits in game one.

The win also marked a milestone for head coach Kelli Duimstra, who earned her 100th career victory at Kalamazoo College.

Game Two, W – 4-3

In game two, the Belles took the early lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs off a sacrifice bunt and adding another off a single up the middle.

Jordan Wesaw sparked the Hornets' offense in the top of the fourth inning with a solo shot to center field, putting Kalamazoo on the board. Shelby Bennett followed in the top of the fifth inning with a solo shot of her own to right field, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Wesaw came up big again for Kalamazoo in the fifth, as she singled to center field to drive in Fridsma to tie the game at three apiece.
Hinkley drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning with a single up the middle to push Ward across the plate.

Jordan Cook earned the win in the circle, improving to 3-5 on the season. She struck out five and allowed just six hits.

Wesaw led the Hornets as she went 2-4 with two RBIs, followed by Alyssa Hinkley and Shelby Bennett who both went 1-3 with 1 RBI.
Emma Newlove and Jaycee Rider both went 2-3 in game two.

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday, April 16th, as they take on Olivet at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
