Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College women's softball team split their midweek doubleheader against Manchester on Wednesday. The Hornets took game one 4-1 before dropping game two 11-6.
Kalamazoo is now 10-6 on the season.
Game One – W, 4-1
The Hornets scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning off a single by
Jaycee Rider to drive in
Emma Newlove. The Spartans answered in the top of the third, trying the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly.
Kalamazoo regained the lead in the bottom of the third as
Macy Ward's single to left center brought
Landrie Fridsma home, making it 2-1. The Hornets then sealed their 4-1 victory in the fifth when Newlove delivered a two-run double to left field, scoring Ward and
Alyssa Hinkley.
Jordan Cook started in the circle for Kalamazoo, earning her third win while allowing just four hits, striking out five, and walking three.
Four Hornets went 2-4 on the day:
Brenna Fisher,
Bella Caza,
Macy Ward, and
Jaycee Rider. Ward and Rider both drove in a run, while Newlove led the team with two RBIs, finishing 1-2.
Game Two – L, 11-6
Manchester struck first in game two, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Hornets quickly responded with three runs in the second to take a 3-2 advantage.
Bella Caza got Kalamazoo on the board with an RBI single up the middle, scoring
Landrie Fridsma in the first. The Hornets then capitalized on a Manchester error to push two more runs across the plate in the bottom of the second.
Manchester broke the game open in the third, recording five hits to drive in eight runs and take a commanding 10-3 lead.
Kalamazoo chipped away in the fifth when
Emma Newlove hit a sacrifice fly to bring home
Alyssa Hinkley, followed by
Ella Neumann's RBI double to left center, cutting the deficit to 10-5.
The Spartans tacked on another run in the seventh. In the Hornets' final push, Newlove launched a solo home run to left field, but it wasn't enough as Kalamazoo fell short.
Maddie Potts suffered the loss, moving to 3-1 on the season.
Ella Neumann and
Bella Caza both went 3-4 with one RBI.
Landrie Fridsma went 2-4, while
Brenna Fisher,
Macy Ward,
Emma Newlove, and
Maddie Potts each added a hit.
The Hornets return to action on Thursday, April 3
rd, as they host Benedictine (IL) in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
