Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College softball team swept their home opener doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan on Friday afternoon, with back-to-back mercy rule victories. The Hornets secured a 16-4 win in game one and an 8-0 shutout in game two, both in just five innings.
Kalamazoo improves to 9-5 on the season.
Game One – W, 16-4 (5 innings)
Ohio Wesleyan was first on the board, scoring a run on a bunt single in the opening inning. Kalamazoo responded back immediately, putting up four runs in the bottom half of the first.
Jordan Wesaw started things off for the Hornets with a single through the left side, bringing in
Brenna Fisher to tie the game at one a piece.
Macy Ward followed with an RBI single to drive in
Landrie Fridsma and advance Wesaw to second.
Emma Newlove hit a shot to right field for a triple to score Wesaw, and
Maddie Potts capped off the inning with a single to bring in Newlove, giving Kalamazoo a 4-1 lead.
The Hornets continued to pile on the runs in the second inning, as
Bella Caza singled up the middle to drive in Fridsma to start the inning. Ward delivered a two-run single up the middle to push
Francesca Ventura and Wesaw across the plate. Newlove took advantage of an Ohio Wesleyan error to put the Hornets up 8-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
The Bishops responded back in the top of the third, scoring two runs to cut the deficit to 8-3. In the bottom of the third, Wesaw doubled to right center to drive in Fisher, and Ward added another RBI single to bring Wesaw home, making it a 10-3 ballgame.
The Hornets put the game out of reach in the fourth, tacking on six more runs for a 16-3 lead. Fisher singled to left to score
Maddy Vrba, and Fridsma followed with a two-run single up the middle. Newlove then sealed the inning with a double to left, plating Ward and Caza.
Ohio Wesleyan added on one run in the top of the fifth to end the game 16-4.
Jordan Wesaw went 3-3 with two RBIs, while
Brenna Fisher,
Landrie Fridsma,
Macy Ward,
Emma Newlove, and
Maddie Potts all contributed two hits. Ward led the team with five RBIs, followed by Newlove with three.
Maddy Vrba earned the win in the circle, striking out five while allowing eight hits and four runs, securing her third victory of the season.
Game Two – W, 8-0 (5 innings)
The Hornets jumped out to an early lead as they put up six runs in the first inning.
Macy Ward kicked things off with a single to left field to drive in
Brenna Fisher and move
Landrie Fridsma around the bases.
Maddie Potts singled to right to drive in Fridsma and Ward to take a 3-0 lead.
Ella Neumann followed with a double to right center to add on two more runs for the Hornets before
Jaycee Rider capped off the inning with an RBI single to right to score Neumann.
In the second inning,
Maddie Potts singled up the middle to push Ward across the plate to make it a 7-0 game.
Potts walked it off with a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the 8-0 mercy rule win.
Maddie Potts went 3-3 with four RBIs, while
Macy Ward went 2-2 with an RBI.
Brenna Fisher,
Ella Neumann, and
Jaycee Rider all added a hit for the Hornets.
Jordan Cook made history in the circle tonight as she threw the program's first perfect game. Cook is now 1-2 on the mound.

st, as they host Manchester in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
