ATLANTA, Ga. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team was defeated 7-4 in the Hornets' season opener at Oglethorpe University on Friday. The Stormy Petrels improved to 2-1 with the win.
Oglethorpe scored the game's first run on an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Kalamazoo responded with two runs off a single by
Cooper Mills in the top of the third.
Oglethorpe took a 7-2 lead with six runs on five hits and an error in the bottom of the fourth. Kalamazoo made it 7-4 on
Ryar Rinehart's 2-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Hornets were held scoreless the rest of the way.
Oglethorpe finished with 10 hits compared to eight by Kalamazoo.
Cooper Mills had two hits and two RBIs while also stealing a base.Â
Ryar Rinehart had two hits including the 2-run home run.
Cade Preissing also had two hits in the game.
Liam Regan had a double.
Jacob Davis took the loss on the mound.
Ben Van Nes allowed just one hit with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief.
Steven Shelton allowed just one hit with one strikeout in the final two innings.
The two teams are back in action Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon. The first game is scheduled for nine innings while the second is scheduled for seven.
