NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost its season opener 52-39 to the University of Mount Union in the Teammates For Life Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Manchester University Saturday night.
Kalamazoo started slow, trailing 20-6 after the first quarter and 30-12 at halftime. The Hornets battled back in the second half, outscoring the Raiders 15-14 in the third and 12-8 in the fourth, but were unable to overcome the early deficit.
Mount Union shot 28.3 percent overall compared to 23.5 percent by Kalamazoo. The Raiders sank 13-of-22 free throws, while Kalamazoo made 14-of-18. Mount Union outrebounded Kalamazoo 43-34, including 15-11 on the offensive end.
Semaj' Robertson led Kalamazoo offensively with 13 points.
Elisabeth Wilks added eight points with seven rebounds.
Sophia Moir scored eight points with three steals in 19 minutes off the bench.
Lauren Vanderstelt scored four points with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Lauren Vos also finished with four points.
Kalamazoo will face Westminster (Pa.) in the tournament consolation game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Westminster was defeated 89-49 by Manchester earlier Saturday evening.
