OLIVET, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team was defeated 61-58 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play Saturday afternoon at Olivet.
Olivet led 11-8 after the first quarter and led by as many as eight in the second quarter before taking a 26-25 lead into halftime. Kalamazoo tied the game twice in the third before entering the fourth down 42-39. Kalamazoo took a 1-point lead but fell behind by seven with 5:23 remaining. The Hornets were still down seven with 2:46 left before cutting the deficit to one with 20 seconds on the clock. Kalamazoo missed a chance to tie with a jumper under 10 seconds and missed a 3-pointer that would have tied at the buzzer.
Olivet shot 36.8 percent overall compared to 31.7 percent by Kalamazoo. The Comets made 16-of-23 free throws compared to 10-of-18 by the Hornets. Kalamazoo held a 48-36 advantage in rebounds, including 18-9 on the offensive end.
Jackie Brines led Kalamazoo with 19 points and three assists.
Sophia Moir finished with 16 points.Â
Ruby Hogan scored 14 points with 16 rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Lauren Vanderstelt was second on the team with 15 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.
Kalamazoo returns home to face Saint Mary's College on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m.
