KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team defeated Case Western Reserve University 96-75 at home Wednesday afternoon.
Kalamazoo (4-1) scored the first basket of the game and never trailed in the contest. The Hornets led by as many as 17 points in the first half, including 40-23 with 4:18 remaining, before taking a 47-31 lead into halftime. Kalamazoo extended its lead to 18 in the second half, including 63-45 with 13:40 left on the clock. The visiting Spartans made a run and cut the deficit to seven (72-65) with 6:30 remaining before Kalamazoo regained a double-digit advantage and carried it the rest of the way.
Kalamazoo shot 46.9 percent overall while holding Case Western Reserve to 38.1 percent. Kalamazoo made 10-of-24 three-pointers compared to 13-of-36 by CWRU. The Hornets also sank 26-of-34 free throws compared to 14-of-22 by the Spartans.
Kalamazoo outrebounded Case Western Reserve 47-38 including 10-6 on the offensive end.
DJ Courtney led five Hornets in double figures with 26 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Patrick Perez scored 15 points.
Lukas Broadsword added 14 points with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Nelson Sompa scored 11 points.
Carter Bandemer finished with 10 points.
Kalamazoo returns to action at home next Tuesday, Dec. 10, when the Hornets host Oberlin College at 6 p.m.
