ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost its season opener 67-59 to Manchester College Saturday at Mount Union University.
Kalamazoo jumped out to a 22-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 33-21 lead into halftime.
Manchester battled back and won the third quarter 19-14 and the fourth 27-12 to claim the eight-point win.
Manchester finished the game shooting 29 percent overall compared to 37.9 percent by Kalamazoo. The Spartans made 5-of-27 three-pointers compared to 2-of-17 by Kalamazoo. Manchester made 22-of-29 free throws compared to 13-of-20 by the Hornets.
Kalamazoo held a 46-41 advantage in rebounds but had 13 more turnovers (23-10).
Jackie Brines led Kalamazoo with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Jordan Wesaw added 14 points.
Lewie Wilks finished with 13 points in her first collegiate game.
Lauren Vanderstelt scored nine points and 13 rebounds in her first game as a Hornet. Her eight blocked shots were the second-highest total in a game in program history.
Alyse Baughman scored five points with eight rebounds.
Taylor Dinda led the team with three assists.
The Hornets face Westminster (Pa.) on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the tournament consolation game at Mount Union.
