KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team won its season opener 130-115 over Grinnell College inside the Anderson Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. Kalamazoo's 130 points set a new school record, breaking the old mark of 128 against Detroit Tech in 1977-78.
Playing its fast-paced style, Grinnell held its biggest lead (5 points) less than five minutes into the game. Kalamazoo used a 12-point run later in the half before taking a 61-40 lead into halftime.
Kalamazoo led by as many as 27 (84-57) with 13:45 left in regulation. The Pioneers battled back to within five (102-97) with 5:29 remaining but were unable to get any closer as the Hornets pulled away in the closing minutes.
Kalamazoo shot 64.9 percent from the field compared to 38.9 percent by Grinnell. The Pioneers made 17-of-53 three-pointers compared to 4-of-14 by the Hornets. Grinnell sank 24-of-39 free throws in a game with 63 total fouls called. Kalamazoo made 30-of-43 free throws.
Lukas Broadsword led Kalamazoo with 32 points and seven rebounds while shooting 12-of-12 from the field and making 8-of-12 free throws.
Patrick Perez scored 24 points with 12 rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Carter Bandemer scored 17 points with four assists.
JJ Stevens added 12 points with eight rebounds.
Nelson Sompa finished with 11 points while tying the school record with 10 assists in the game.
DJ Ferguson was the sixth Hornet in double figures with 10 points.
Bradley Eziuka added eight points and was one of three players with four assists.
Kalamazoo returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 16, when the Hornets travel to Dominican University (Ill.) for a 3:30 p.m. CT contest.
