Men's Basketball Falls in 2022-23 Finale to Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team traveled to Hope for its final game of the 2022-23 season on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18). After a tightly contested first half, the Flying Dutchmen pulled away from the Hornets in the second half and won 77-62.

Kalamazoo held the lead for the first five minutes of the ball game until Hope went on a 14-0 run to go up 17-5 at the halfway point of the half. After trading a couple of baskets, the Hornets went on an 8-2 run to pull within four with five minutes remaining. The two teams played out the rest of the half and Hope led 34-29 heading into the locker room.

The Hornets scored the first two baskets coming out of the half to get within a point. Then, Hope scored 16 of the following 24 points to slowly grow the lead back out to nine with 12:57 on the clock. It was at the 6:52 mark that the Flying Dutchmen grabbed a double-digit lead. The deficit got up to 17 before Hope took the 15-point win.

Josh Decker was the leading scorer for the Hornets, scoring 17 points, including five three-pointers. Ty Horky scored 16 points for Kalamazoo and also had a couple of assists. Lukas Broadsword tallied 11 points to go along with two steals. DJ Courtney had a team-high seven rebounds to go along with his eight points.

Rounding out the scoring for Kalamazoo was Addison Atwater (5), Bobby Samples (3), and Nicholas Olmeda (2). Hope had a 44.6% (29-65) field goal percentage compared to Kalamazoo's 43.4% (23-53). In addition, the Hornets had a 40.0% (10-25) three-point percentage, while the Flying Dutchmen were at 30.8% (8-26).

Kalamazoo finishes its season with a 5-20 (3-11 MIAA) record.
