Men's Basketball Takes Care of Manchester for Fifth Straight Win

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team hosted Manchester in non-conference action on Monday (Nov. 27). The Hornets matched their win total from the 2022-23 season after defeating the Spartans 88-70 for their fifth straight win.

Manchester built up an eight-point lead early in the first half, as the scoreboard read 18-10 at the 12:29 mark. Then, Kalamazoo outscored the Spartans 40-18 for the remainder of the half, including a 13-3 run in the last two minutes.

The Hornets grew their lead to as much as 23 in the second half. A 9-2 MU run forced Kalamazoo to call a timeout as the Hornets led 64-49 at the 11:21 mark. The Hornet lead never got under 13, as K had a response every time Manchester made a couple of baskets.

Kalamazoo shot 50.8% overall compared to Manchester's 35.7%. The Hornets made 10 of 26 (38.5%) three-pointers compared to 13 of 42 (31.0%) by the Spartans. Kalamazoo went 16 of 20 (80.0%) from the free throw line compared to 7 of 11 (63.6%) by Manchester. The Hornets and Spartans had 40 rebounds each, while Kalamazoo had 15 assists on 31 made field goals.

Ty Horky was the leading scorer for Kalamazoo, going 8 of 14 from the field for 21 points and adding five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. Gabriel Sharp finished with 15 points off the bench in nine minutes of action by going 4 of 5 from the field, 2 of 3 from three-point range, and five of six from the free throw line. Carter Bandemer also had 14 points with four field goals, three three-pointers, and three free throws.

Lukas Broadsword was the leading rebounder with seven, as Horky, Bandemer, and Patrick Perez collected five boards each. Lucas Hanifan had four assists off the bench, with Broadsword also collecting three. 

Broadsword (8), Perez (7), Bobby Samples (7), Alex Rueff (6), JJ Stevens (6), Hanifan (2), and DJ Ferguson (2) rounded out the scoring for the Hornets.

Kalamazoo will be back in action at home against Chicago on Wednesday (Nov. 29), beginning at 7 p.m.
